Chapter 6: The Nursery

"Say no," Seo-yeon said.

"I'm going to say no." Bo-ra's voice was tight. "I'm going to say it to her face. But first I'm asking for the full brief."

"Why?"

"Because she wants to buy my partner with a house in Jeju," Bo-ra said. "I want to know what's in the house."

The brief came at nine the next morning, with a meeting set for two o'clock in the Hwaseon Hotel tea lounge.

At eleven, Do-hyun walked into Seo-yeon's mother's shop and sat down at table four.

Her mother had been up since five. She had made the broth twice.

"Clause three," he said to Seo-yeon, as if she had asked.

"It's not signed."

"It's signed on my side."

Her mother set the bowl down in front of him and stood there with her arms folded, waiting.

He ate the first mouthful.

He put down his spoon, looked her in the eye and said, with no expression at all, "It's good."

Her mother beamed.

"He says it like a weather report," Seo-yeon told her in the kitchen.

"He says it like he means it." Her mother was cutting extra kimchi. "Your other one said everything like a greeting card."

When Seo-yeon came back out, Do-hyun was reading the menu on the wall.

"Who wrote it?" he asked.

"My father. The year before he died."

He looked at it a long time. At the careful, square letters.

"Good hand," he said.

Seo-yeon and Bo-ra walked into the tea lounge at two o'clock exactly.

Madam Heo was at a window table with a pot of chrysanthemum tea and her secretary.

She saw Seo-yeon and her smile didn't change, but her eyes did.

"I invited Ms. Noh," she said.

"Ms. Baek is my partner," Bo-ra said, sitting down. "Anything you say to me, she hears. Saves time."
