Chapter 31: The Price

For two weeks I didn't let our daughter out of my arms.

I fed her in the west tower with the door barred. I walked the halls with her tied to my chest in a shawl.

When she slept, I slept sitting up beside her cradle with my father's pruning knife in my lap.

I knew a knife couldn't stop a fairy. I kept it there anyway.

Cassian didn't tell me I was being foolish.

He put a cot across the tower doorway and slept on it.

"Do you think she'd do it?" I asked him one night. "Take her?"

"I think she keeps her word exactly," he said. "And I think we don't know what she asked."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only true one I've got."

Florian came up the valley road on the morning of the Hunter's Moon.

He came on a better horse this time, with a long flat box tied on behind.

Dulcie rode beside him, home from Avenmoor for the harvest, talking his ear off about rootstock.

The village children ran out to meet him. They'd heard he was the prince who tore up the paper on the ridge. To them he was a hero.

He got down and let them hang on his arms.

When he saw me in the courtyard with our daughter tied to my chest, he stopped.
