Chapter 15: The Pot
The Ashworth Reading Room had her family's name over the door in brass letters.
That was why I chose it.
On Tuesday afternoon I walked in with my phone in my hand.
Sheridan sat at the long oak table by the window, writing in a leather planner.
Two juniors sat at the far end with their laptops.
A librarian stamped books behind the desk.
Sheridan didn't look up.
"You're in my seat," she said.
"This is a public room, and I'm not in a seat."
I stood across from her.
"Let's talk about the account."
Now she looked up.
Her eyes were as cold and pale as ever, but her pen had stopped moving.
"I don't know what account you mean."
"Fifty thousand dollars. Four boys at twelve and a half each. Held by Sheridan Ashworth in her own name."
"That was a joke, in a group chat."
"You said it yourself on the screen. The pot is sitting in an account in my name."
The juniors had stopped typing.
Sheridan lowered her voice.
"The money was given to me as gifts, and gifts are mine. Nobody wrote anything down. Nobody can claim a cent."
"Gifts to hold for a bet."
