Chapter 16: Breakfast Hall
I tore the typed statement in half in front of Brooks, then in quarters, and let the pieces fall on the corridor carpet.
"That's a no," Roisin said helpfully.
Brooks looked at the paper at his feet and then at me.
"You don't get it," he said. "He'll do it. Your mother is going to lose her job over your pride."
"Get out of my building."
He went.
I called my mother from the stairwell, whispering so the hall wouldn't hear.
She listened to the whole thing without a word.
Then she said, "Baby, I scrubbed floors before there was a Hollis, and I'll scrub them after. Don't you dare sign."
I cried, a little, on the cold steps.
Then I wiped my face and gave Roisin her phone back, and we listened to the recording together, twice, and she nodded.
"Breakfast," she said.
"Breakfast," I said.
At seven-forty the next morning the dining hall was loud with the last days before break.
Brooks sat at the lacrosse table with a duffel bag at his feet and a plate he wasn't eating.
His flight left at ten.
He had the look of a boy who thought the night had gone fine.
