Chapter 11: The Hotel Door

The knock came at one in the morning.

I was alone in the suite on the twenty-second floor, with the lights off and a spreadsheet glowing on the laptop.

I knew who it was before I opened the door.

Roxy stood in the hallway in a gray coat, her hair down.

She'd been crying, and she'd stopped, and her face looked scrubbed raw.

"How did you find me?" I said.

"Dex told the doorman you were a friend of the family."

"Dex isn't supposed to know where I am."

"I asked him nicely."

"You went to my best friend."

"I went to everyone," she said, and her voice cracked. "Can I come in?"

I held the door.

She walked past me into the dark living room and stopped at the window, where the city lay spread out in gold and black.

I closed the door and stayed against it.

"You watched me from the glass this morning," I said.

"I couldn't stop."

"You've had weeks to say something. You wait until I humiliate your father?"

"I know."

She turned.

"I know what you did on the showroom floor."

"I know why."

"Zane, I wanted to scream with you."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because I can't."

"Can't."

"I can't tell you."

She wrapped her arms around her coat.

"I just came to see you."

"Is that so terrible?"

"Yes."

"Okay."

"You stood there and gave me back my ring."

"I know."

"You let him laugh at me."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Do you have any idea how I felt for two weeks walking around a city that had put me in the gutter?"

She crossed the room and stopped in front of me, close enough that I could see the freckles across her nose.

"Hit me, if you want," she said. "Say it. All of it. I'll stand here."

I didn't hit her.

I took her by the face with both hands, and her eyes fluttered shut, and I kissed her.

It wasn't gentle.

It was two weeks of fury in a single breath.

She met it with her mouth open and her fingers knotted in the front of my shirt.

She tasted like salt and tea.

She made a sound in her throat that I'd heard in my sleep.

I backed her into the wall.
