Chapter 23: Fourteenth of March

On Sunday the dining room at the Allegheny Hills Club held a hundred and twenty chairs, and every one of them was full at eight.

The ceiling still had its painted ducks, and there was a banner over the head table that said Happy Birthday, Roxanne.

Gerald stood under it in a fresh navy suit, with a carnation in his lapel.

No charge had touched him yet, so he did what he had always done.

He acted as if nothing was wrong.

I stood against the back wall in my charcoal suit with Dex and Veronica, and Roxy stood beside me in a long green dress.

She had asked to be there when it happened, and she had not asked to be beside her father.

"She came," a woman whispered near the buffet.

"After what she signed? Brave girl."

"Or foolish."

Gerald tapped a spoon on his glass.

The room quieted, and he gave them the smile that never moved his hair.

"Friends," he said. "Tonight is my daughter's twenty-seventh birthday."

A scatter of applause, uncertain.

"There have been rumors in recent months. I want to say, here, that every dollar of my family's affairs has been conducted with honor, and the truth will come out."
