Chapter 24: The Ring
The apartment in Lawrenceville still had the lumpy couch and the onion smell.
I had kept the lease in January, when I could have bought the building, because I wanted somewhere to go back to.
Dex had cooked three dozen pierogi in the one pan, and he served them on paper plates.
Veronica sat on the arm of the couch in her cream suit and ate with a plastic fork, and she looked happier than I had ever seen her.
"I invested in a delivery boy," she said, lifting the fork to Roxy. "He turned out to be very profitable."
"I was a courier."
"You were a bargain."
Roxy laughed with her mouth full, and she did not hide it.
She sat on the floor in her green dress with her back against my knees, eating from a plate on her lap.
At ten, Dex stood and put on his coat, though it was his own apartment.
"I have to go be somewhere else," he announced.
"Where?" I said.
"Somewhere that isn't here." He pointed a finger at me. "Do not use my toaster."
Veronica kissed Roxy on the cheek, and told me quietly, "Don't waste it," and followed him out.
The door closed.
It was very quiet, and the radiator knocked in the wall.
Roxy put her plate on the floor and stood and turned to face me.
"I'm twenty-seven now," she said.
