Chapter 8: The Offer

Chalfant Capital took up the top four floors of a glass tower downtown, and Preston's office had a view of nothing but other people's rooftops.

He had sent a car for me on Monday morning.

I told Veronica I was going, and she said, "Good. Look at everything and sign nothing."

Now I sat in a leather chair that cost more than a year of my old rent and watched him pour two coffees from a silver pot.

"I'll be direct," Preston said. "I read your trades. All thirty-one of them."

"You were reading my account?"

"Taliaferro is a small shop. Small shops talk." He smiled and sat across from me with his ankle on his knee. "You're twenty-six, you've got no training and you've been right a hundred percent of the time. That isn't a skill. It's an anomaly. I want to buy the anomaly."

"I'm not for sale."

"Everyone is. We just haven't found your currency." He slid a leather folder across the desk. "A partnership. Twelve percent of Chalfant Capital, a salary of eight hundred thousand a year, an office on this floor. All you do is tell me what to buy."

I opened the folder.

The paper inside was heavy and good, the kind of contract that has a ribbon.

A number hung over it.

It was red, and it wasn't small.

Minus 6.9 percent.

Red over a contract meant whatever Preston had written down here would cost me.

"What's the catch?" I said.

"No catch."

"Everyone has a catch."

He laughed softly.

"The catch is that I'm a businessman, Zane. I want the best on my side. You, I think, want something else."

"Like what?"

"Like a seat at the table where they once told you to leave." He leaned forward. "I saw your face on the terrace. You want to ruin Gerald Maddox."
