Chapter 14: The Kitchen Road

Hallie's POV

The rubber dinghy took an hour to cross the bay, and my hands bled through the oar grips.

I did not cry.

I had decided that on the water, with my back to him, and the decision held.

The Langford seawall rose out of the mist, gray stone with iron rings, and beyond it the lawn where I had stood yesterday.

The white chairs were gone.

Two men in dark jackets were folding the last of the tent.

I rowed along the base of the wall to the sea stairs, where an old boat ramp ran down into the water under a stone overhang.

Nobody had looked at that ramp in fifty years.

I dragged the dinghy up beside it and shoved the camera case into the gap between the ramp and the wall.

Then I held the memory card in its plastic sleeve and thought about where to hide it from people who would search me.

If they searched me, they would find it.

If they searched the dinghy, they would find the case, and the case was worthless without the card.

I put the card in the rowlock, screwed the cap down over it and left the oars lying across the seat.

Let them take the oars.

Then I climbed the stairs in Mason's sweatshirt and a ruined green dress, with the baby turning over under my ribs.

Halfway up, I stopped.

A man stood on the landing at the top with his hat in his hand.

It was the deputy from the dock.

"I figured it was you," he said. "Nobody else would be crazy enough to row."

"My mother."

"East sitting room, second floor. There's a nurse outside the door." He did not look at me. "The old man's at the front gate with every guard he's got, and somebody just wrecked the launch on the Ledge. I've got maybe a quarter of an hour."

"Who wrecked the launch?"

"I don't ask."

He opened the kitchen door.

A cook stood at the stove with her back to us, and she did not turn around.
