Chapter 15: Investor Day

My mother sat on a bench in my lobby with her suitcase between her feet.

She had taken off her camel coat and folded it across her knees.

The night guard stood twenty feet away, looking at the ceiling.

"I won't leave," she said before I reached her. "You can call the police. I'll sit here until you let me speak."

"Speak now."

"Not to you. To them."

"To whom?"

She held up a cream card with gold edges.

HARBOR LINE INVESTOR DAY. ADMIT ONE. Her name was printed on it in careful script.

"A club friend's husband holds your shares," she said. "He gave his wife a guest pass, and she gave it to me."

I looked at the card.

Six hundred people were due in my atrium at nine.

"Mom, you can have a seat."

"I beg your pardon?"

"The invitation is real, so you can sit in it. Nobody is going to throw you out for holding a card."

Her mouth twitched, and I saw that she had planned for a fight.

"What's the catch?"

"There isn't one. Guard, please bring my mother a blanket and a glass of water."
