Chapter 28: Lydia Says It
Nobody in the boardroom breathed as Lydia crossed it.
She walked the full length of the table, past the buyers and the stack of colored tabs.
She stopped at the empty end beside my grandmother.
Against the wall sat a woman from the Tribune and a photographer.
The Chairman had put them there at seven fifty-five with a glass of water each.
"Lydia," Desmond said. "Darling. You're not well."
She did not look at him.
"My name is Lydia Kenilworth," she said. "I used to be Lydia Roarke.
"For fourteen months I was the bookkeeper of the Corrigan Family Foundation, and I stole three point eight million dollars from it."
A pen rolled off the table.
"Nobody else stole it.
"I sat in the Roarke study with Desmond's laptop on my knees.
"I typed the logins he gave me, three nights, at 2:14 in the morning.
"I sent the wires to Larkspur Holdings.
"Larkspur paid my condo.
"It paid his club."
"This woman suffered a head injury," Desmond said to the room, in a voice that reached for calm and missed. "She's been medicated. She's confused."
