Chapter 21: Her Last Plea

The trustee had flown nineteen hours to read one paragraph aloud, and he intended to do it properly.

He sat at the head of the hotel's conference table on Tuesday morning with a leather folder and two reading glasses.

Grandma's lawyer was a small, careful man, and he carried the folder in both arms.

A second trustee, a quiet woman with white braids, sat at his right hand.

Dani sat beside me, eating a dry roll in small bites because the doctor had told her to.

Across from us sat my mother.

She had arrived at eight in a navy coat, alone, and she looked ten years older than she had at the party.

"Mrs. Loomis," the trustee said. "You asked to be present. You are entitled to hear this, and you are not entitled to speak."

"I know."

"Then I'll begin."

He opened the folder.

"The founder established this trust for her blood descendants. Mr. Vernon Loomis was named custodian of the shares until each grandchild turned thirty."

Joyce's hands tightened on her purse.

"The second name on his family record was false. That voids his custody, and the trustees have already filed it with the court."

"Vernon did what he thought was right," Joyce said, before she could stop herself.

"He did what paid," the woman with the white braids said, without raising her voice.

The trustee turned a page.

"The trustees therefore remove Mr. Loomis as custodian, effective today. Miss Tara Loomis's share is released to her in full, with the interest, including the share's income for the last seven years, which she was never told existed."

I had known it was coming, and my ears still rang.

"How much?" Dani said, very softly.

The trustee told us.
