Chapter 30: The Doors

The Tower doors at Expo Park stood open on a cold bright Monday morning, and the plaza outside them was full.

Gyu-ho stopped just inside, in the gray shadow, where nobody could see him yet.

He could see them.

There were news vans parked across the lawns with their masts up.

There were Association barriers and police, and behind the barriers thousands of people with their phones held over their heads.

Off to the left the coin exchange had its shutters up, and its queue ran all the way around the fountain.

The rate board over the counter said 100,000 won a coin, as it had said since the spring of Tower Day.

He did that sum without wanting to, standing there.

Forty-seven thousand coins sat in a hole in a rock on his floor, and the board said that was four billion seven hundred million won.

The five went out ahead of him, because he asked them to.

The knitter went first, in her mud-stiff padded coat, with the sock finished now and stuffed in her pocket.

The crowd saw her and shouted.

The ticket boy came next, and the rider with his helmet under his arm.

The cook came after them, and the bus driver last, with his cap in his hands.

Every camera on the plaza turned to them.

For four months the news had drawn the Market from what climbers told it, because every photo inside the Tower came out gray.
