Chapter 60: Owed Nothing

"Then come to Velde on Midsummer Day," I said. "It leaves at noon."

"I'll be there," said the king.

I walked down the long hall past the empty places where the river lords had stood.

Out on the palace steps, the square below was packed with mothers.

Anke stood at the top of the steps with the Charter in her hands.

Ottmar had told the clerk to give her the first copy.

She read it out to them in her forge voice, one line at a time.

When she got to the end, nobody cheered.

They held their daughters up instead, a hundred and sixty of them, high over their heads in the sun.

Ten days later the alewife called the assembly in the town hall at Velde.

"Here's the thing," she said, and banged her ladle on the table. "The crown owed us forty thousand marks."

"Now it owes us nothing. The Lord of Velde gave it all back for four lines of writing."

"So what are we now?"

There were four hundred people in the hall, and most of them were looking at me.

"Ask the river," I said.

"The towing charter brings us a fee on every cargo that goes up from Hessa. That's more than the bonds ever paid in interest."
