Chapter 16: Dead Woman Walking

The rider unrolled two copied pages on the lodge table, and Seraphine bent over them with a candle.

One was the letter that had hanged her, the order to a cook to put bitter almond in the Saint's cup.

The other was the new letter, the third from the Prince's rooms.

"They were both written by one hand," the rider said. "The Queen's clerks matched the loops of the capital letters."

"That is not my hand," Seraphine said, flatly. "It is a very good copy of my hand."

"Whoever wrote the first letter wrote the second," said Haruka. "He wrote your death, and now he's writing to the Prince."

"Then he is the spy."

"The Queen thinks so."

"Who carried the letters?" Seraphine asked.

The rider shifted his weight.

"A courier rides north from Aldmere every ninth night to the Hollin Road inn. He hands a packet to the innkeeper's man and rides back before dawn. We have never seen his face. He keeps his hood up."

"Tonight is the ninth night."

"It is."

"Then I am coming," Seraphine said.

Haruka put down the page.

"No."

"Eleonora."

"You are dead. You were buried in a coffin yesterday, in front of the whole city."

"Which is exactly why I am the only person who can do this." Seraphine pointed at the forged order. "Whoever wrote this stood behind my chair and watched me sign a hundred notes. He watched my loops and my flourish until he could draw them in his sleep. I have been looked at by a great many people in my life, and I have never once forgotten who stood behind me."
