Chapter 24: Every Day
Haruka said yes four times, and Seraphine made her say it a fifth.
The Queen signed the license three days later with her own pen, from her bed, with a cough that rattled the inkwell.
The wedding was held in the chapel at Ardwyn on a clear cold morning, with frost on the hedges.
The little stone chapel had no roof worth the name yet, only sailcloth and borrowed beams.
The household had filled every inch of it with winter holly.
The steward wept before the doors opened.
Corwin stood at the front in a new dark-blue cloak, with the iron ring on his finger.
He was trying very hard to look like a man who had heard nothing his whole life.
Marguerite sat beside the Queen with her curls pinned up, and she cried the instant Seraphine appeared, as she had promised to.
Queen Imelda had come in a closed litter, with a physician at each elbow.
She sat in the front pew in black and said she would be quite fine.
Seraphine walked up the aisle alone.
She wore green, the green of the stone in her mother's ring, with copper hair loose to her waist and a crown of holly.
She did not hurry.
She looked at every face in the chapel as she passed, and every one of them looked back.
Haruka stood at the altar in a plain dark-blue coat with no breastplate, and her hands would not stay still.
When Seraphine reached her, she took them both and held them hard.
"You're shaking," Seraphine murmured.
"I carried you out of a square. I've never been this scared."
"Good."
The priest was old and deaf and spoke very loudly, and said the vows in the old tongue of Carrow.
When it came to Haruka's turn, she did not say them.
She dropped to one knee on the stone, as she had in a cell on the first morning.
She laid her hands open in front of her.
"I swore a guard's oath to you," she said. "I swore I would keep you from the dark."
The chapel was silent.
"I never said what I'd do after it was over. I'm saying it now." She looked up. "I'll carry you out of every dark you ever have. I'll stand on your stair. I'll cook eggs, badly. And I'll be your wife until I'm too old to lift you, and then I'll find a way to lift you anyway."
Somebody in the pews let out a wet laugh.
Seraphine had her hand pressed against her mouth.
"Get up," she said hoarsely. "Get up, Haruka."
Haruka rose.
"I asked a guard for fourteen mornings," Seraphine said. She turned to face the whole chapel, and her voice rang to the beams. "And I got more than a guard. I release you from the oath. I take you in the other."
