Chapter 4: The Prince Calls

Prince Aldric walked up the last stair with twelve guards behind him and a lantern held at his shoulder.

He was twenty-five, with dark-gold hair and a white and gold coat that had never been near mud.

He smiled at Haruka before he looked at anyone else.

"Captain Delamere. You're up late."

"Your Highness." Haruka stood in front of the cell door with her sword in its scabbard and her left hand resting on the hilt. "The tower is closed at night."

"To everyone but me. I'm the Queen's son."

"Then you'll have the Queen's order to show."

For a heartbeat his smile held.

Then he laughed, light and pleased, and pulled a folded paper from his sleeve.

It carried the royal seal.

Haruka read it by the lantern.

It said the Prince might visit the prisoner at his pleasure in the days before the sentence.

It was real.

She handed it back.

"Five minutes."

"You're generous," Aldric said. He stepped around her to the bars, and looked in, and let his smile soften into something almost kind. "Seraphine."

"Aldric."

Seraphine stood in the middle of the cell with her chained hands folded, perfectly upright.

She had wiped her face.

Her mouth was still a little pink, and Haruka kept her eyes carefully on the Prince so as not to look at it.

"You look well," he said. "Prison suits you."

"You look fat. The Ardwyn rents are agreeing with you."

His smile flickered.

"I sent you bread today," he said, still pleasant. "I was told it was returned to the moat. Such a waste. The palace baker was proud of it."

Haruka's knuckles tightened on her sword.

"The Lady has her meals from the guards' mess, Your Highness."

"So I'm told. You have such interesting ideas this week, Captain." He turned his blue eyes on her, and the warmth in them went flat and cold. "Walk with me a moment."
