Chapter 23: What Verena Owed
Caspian dressed in moments, with a straight back and the stiff calm of a man who has been caught.
He kissed Mio's temple on his way past the bed, and his hand slid once down the length of her bare arm under the sheet.
"I will be in the corridor," he said.
"Not you, brother," said Verena, setting the tea tray on the table.
"Go away. I have things to say to her that you will not like."
He went, and the door closed behind him, and the lamp-lit room was suddenly very quiet.
Mio pulled the sheet to her chin and Verena poured two cups.
She was in her green dressing gown, with her ringlets down.
She looked very young.
"Sugar?" Verena asked.
Mio stared at her.
Verena stared back, and then both of them began to laugh, helplessly, until Mio had to wipe her eyes on the sheet.
"No sugar," Mio said. "Never again."
"Never."
Verena sat on the edge of the bed, and held her cup in both hands.
The laughter ran out.
"I have a confession," she said. "I told you I took the blame to spare you. That is true."
