Chapter 9: The Window

Verena Sevrin was under house arrest, and she had decided to be the worst hostess in the house.

She sat at the head of the long dining table in a dressing gown of green silk.

Four guards were visible through the open doors, and she poured wine into three glasses.

"Sit, Tilda. No, not at the foot. Beside me."

"My lady, I'm the maid."

"You are the maid who emptied a pot of tea into the heir to the throne. You will sit where I say."

Mio sat.

Caspian took the chair across from them, black coat, grey eyes, a face.

"You are staring, brother," said Verena.

"I am not."

"You are looking at her as if she were the last roll in the basket."

"Verena."

"I have never seen you eat the soup before," Verena went on, tasting hers.

Her violet eyes slid sideways to Mio with real mischief.

"It is quite a change."

Mio choked on her wine.

Caspian said nothing, but the tips of his ears went dark.

Verena laughed, a bright peal that rang under the painted ceiling.

Then she lifted her glass.

"To the maid who ruined a prince's trousers," she said. "I will not have you hang for my sins, Tilda. Whatever it costs me."

She drank.

Her hand was steady, and her eyes were wet.

Mio had never loved a character in a book so much.

She had never wanted so badly to get someone out of one.

She drank too, and did not say anything.

They finished dinner without talking about the letter once.

At dawn the window of Caspian's bedroom was a tall pane of gold.

It reached from the floor to the ceiling.

The garden below was a grey sea of mist, with the first light coming up behind the stable roof.

Mio woke alone in the black bed and found him standing at the glass.

He was naked, with his back to her.

The long muscles of it were lit pink and gold, and his hands were flat against the window frame.
