Chapter 21: Ginger Rice for Two
On Sunday afternoon, Cora came home with her duffel and tied on an apron.
"I want to learn the ginger rice," she said. "And the lasagna. The real one, not the one you made when you were sorry."
I stared at her.
"I knew it was a sorry lasagna," she said. "It was always better after a fight."
"I didn't know you noticed."
"I notice everything. I just never said."
I handed her a knife.
We stood side by side at the island, and I showed her how to cut ginger into coins without losing a thumb.
"Thinner," I said.
"You're hovering."
"I'm standing."
"You're hovering in a standing way."
I stepped back one full pace, and she grinned at the cutting board.
"Your scores came in," I said.
"Yeah." She shrugged. "Two hundred points under the fake ones."
"Are you all right?"
"They're mine," she said. "I can work with mine."
For a while the kitchen only had the sound of the knife and the rice cooker clicking.
"Mom."
"Yes?"
"Tell me about Grandpa's funeral."
My hand stopped on the pot.
"Why?"
"Because I was eight, and I remember something, and I need to know if I made it up."
I turned the burner down.
"What do you remember?"
"It was cold. You cried, and Dad held your elbow. And there was a lady at the back in a black dress." She frowned at the ginger. "I got bored during the speeches and wandered. She was standing against the wall. She gave me a peppermint."
The knife felt very heavy in my hand.
"She asked me my name," Cora said. "I told her. She said, 'That's a good name.' Then she said, 'Go back to your mother,' and I did."
