Chapter 6: One Wheat Cutlet

The hospital called at 12:40 that night.

I was in the old office at my desk, reading, and I picked up on the first ring.

"Mrs. Farwell? This is the emergency department. Your daughter was brought in with severe vomiting. You're the primary contact on her file."

I was already standing.

"Is she breathing on her own?"

"Yes. She's dehydrated. She's asking for someone named Delaney."

"I'm coming."

Simon was in the doorway before I had my coat on. He had a laptop bag over one shoulder.

"I'll drive."

"You don't have to."

"You haven't slept more than three hours since Monday," he said. "I saw the pile of coffee cups. Get in the car."

He held the passenger door open.

On the highway, he finally spoke.

"Whatever you walk in on, you don't have to win it tonight."

"Then what do I have to do?"

"Be right in front of witnesses," he said. "You used to be very good at that."

He said nothing else the entire way.

It was past one when I reached the emergency room.

Cora lay on a bed with an IV in her arm, gray and shaking.

Delaney sat beside her in a silk robe and sneakers, holding her hand.

Gilbert stood at the foot of the bed with his arms folded.

A young doctor was talking.

"I just need to know exactly what she ate tonight."

"Chicken parmesan," Delaney said. "I made it myself. And a side salad."

"With breading?"

"Almond flour, I think." She tipped her head. "Honestly, I think it's the stress. She's been very anxious since she left home. I read that the whole gluten thing is overdiagnosed anyway."
