Chapter 13: Dale's Duffel
Dale stood at the bottom of the porch steps with the duffel hanging from his fist.
Everett came down two steps and stopped between us.
"Say it from there," he said.
"I'm not here to fight you, Lund."
"Good. You'd lose."
Dale looked past him, at me.
"I never touched Sloane's tea," he said. "I want that on record first. I picked up Mom's prescription because she asked me to, and she told me it was for her nerves."
"You picked it up every month for twelve years," I said.
"I didn't read the label."
"You sell insurance, Dale. You read the label on everything."
His face went red, and I saw him decide not to argue.
"Fine," he said. "I want a deal. I tell the deputies what I know, and I'm a witness. I'm not a defendant."
"I don't make deals."
"You're the victim. They'll listen to you."
"The night before my wedding I was on the phone with 911," I said, "and you ran for the front door to throw the deadbolt."
"Mom was bleeding!"
"Mom told me not to call anyone. And you went for the lock."
He opened his mouth and nothing came out.
The deputy at the gate had turned around to watch us.
Behind me the porch swing creaked, and I knew the housekeeper was listening with her hands folded in her lap.
"I'm not your lawyer," I said. "I'm not your sister today, either. If you have something, give it to the deputy."
"You think I'm lying?"
"I think you've been standing in doorways all my life, and you're standing in one now."
