Chapter 23: What He Pays to Open

Sera took Kael's journal off the table before he had finished reading the entry, and turned it to the page where he kept the orders he had signed in his own hand.

'Write it here,' she said. 'Not on a loose sheet. Here, under the last one, so the date runs.'

Kael looked at the page and then at her. He had not moved from the foot of the bed since Maren had lifted her finger off the register.

'You want the bench in this room,' he said.

'I want the bench, the scribe, and every witness the pack keeps on its rolls, in this room, before the writ is served on me.' She set the journal flat on the blanket and put the pen in his hand. 'You can do that. It is the one thing on this floor you can do that Lirien cannot undo by morning.'

He took the pen. He did not write yet.

'If I call them,' he said, 'they will come with the writ in their hands and the writ will not care what this room heard.'

'Then let them come and read it in front of her.'

That was the part he did not follow, and she watched him not follow it. He thought she was asking to be shielded. He thought the hearing was a wall she wanted built between herself and the gate. He wrote the order because he believed he was buying her time, and Sera let him keep believing it, and banked the insult the way she banked everything else.
