Chapter 30: The Seat She Takes

Sera crossed the sanctuary hall before Eln's clerk could set the slate down, took it out of the man's hands, and carried it to the witness bench herself.

Lirien had already sat. She had taken the high-backed chair at the end, the one facing the gallery, and set both hands flat on the table in front of her, which is how a person sits when they intend to be the one asking questions. Sera put the slate down in front of her, face up.

'You are in my seat,' Lirien said. 'The attendance list places the witness at the east bench.'

'It places the Alpha at the east bench,' Sera said. 'It places me nowhere. Read the second line.'

Lirien did not read it. Her glasses had slipped again, and this time she pushed them up, one finger, slow, the way she did when she was deciding what to say next. Sera watched the amber rise around her head, thin and low, and heard the second voice underneath the room's noise.

She has counted the benches. She thinks the panel will take the gate record last, after the bloodline challenge, so the fraud finding never reaches the same page as her name.

So that was the plan. Keep the two documents apart, and let the panel weigh a bloodline challenge without the ruling that already called her filing a fraud on the panel. Sera filed it and did not let her face change.
