Chapter 8: Thursday
The old Don looked from Dominic's face to mine and back.
"Come in or go out, Ferrante," he said. "You're letting the smoke out."
Dominic shut the door behind him.
"I didn't tell her anything," he said. "I'd like to know where she heard it."
"A dream," I said.
Both men looked at me.
"A bad dream. I woke up this morning with the whole thing in my head. The warehouse, the seizure, the eleven names. I'd never heard of it before Sunday."
The old Don grunted.
"My wife used to dream," he said. "She dreamed my brother's death a week before it came."
He picked up the telephone on his desk.
"I'm calling the capos tonight," he said. "I'll tell them I don't like the smell of the warehouse. Not a word about you, signora. Not a word to my grandson."
"Thank you, Don."
"Don't thank me yet. If Thursday comes and goes and nothing happens, I'll know exactly what your word is worth."
"Yes, Don."
"And if it happens," he said, and for the first time he almost smiled, "I'll want to know what else you dream."
Thursday morning the federal agents came to Port Newark with trucks and warrants at six a.m.
By nine, every channel in New York had a helicopter over the warehouse.
By ten, Nino Brancato had called his mother four times.
I know, because I was in the Brancato kitchen when the call came, standing at the counter with a cup of plain water from the tap.
The old Don had summoned the whole family to the house for lunch.
He had not told them why.
Nino burst in from the hall with his collar open and his phone in his fist.
"They're gone," he said. "Every container. They've got my cousin. Nonno, it's a catastrophe, it's an ambush. Someone told them."
"Who?" the old Don said mildly, from his chair.
