Chapter 14: Her Mother's Bed

Patrick's POV

Jocelyn set her wine glass on the dressing table and did not spill a drop.

I had spent six years being quiet in rooms, and I had never been so aware of my own hands.

"Before anyone says anything they'll regret," she said, "let's be clear about what exists."

She ticked them off on her fingers.

"A phone that belongs to the company. A file with the word Archive on it. A frightened girl who has just screamed a name at three hundred people."

"Your name," Natalie said.

"A name she was told to say, by someone who wants a lot from me."

Jocelyn looked at me then, and her eyes were hazel and perfectly friendly.

"Mr. Rask. You're the one man in the building with a motive to hurt this family. I'd think about that before you drive anyone anywhere."

I said nothing. My jaw hurt.

She turned back to Natalie, and her voice dropped to the one she must have used at the christening.

"Nat. I love you. I'm going to say one thing, and I want you to hear it as a friend."

"Say it."

"Annie's mother has a bed on the fourth floor of St. Anne's. The bed is in my name until midnight."

Annie made a sound on the floor.

"I would hate for anything to happen to her tonight, because of what we all did to her in there."

She took her glass again, and she went out.

Desmond was waiting in the corridor. I watched him take her arm, and I watched her lean her head against his shoulder for exactly one step.
