Reborn to Destroy My Husband's Crying Mistress novel · Chapter 4 of 6

Chapter 4: The Coat in the Doorway

My husband's mother was shouting at her son through the boardroom wall, and the nursery head was still on my phone telling me the police were standing at her desk.

I kept the phone face up on the table and my voice level.

'She's here,' the head said. 'Two officers. They're asking about the slip.'

'Tell them I'm on the fourth floor,' I said. 'And tell them what the woman looked like.'

A pause. Paper moving.

'Tall,' the head said. 'Fair. Grey coat. She wrote the child's mother's name down as her own.'

My hand went flat on the table.

She had written Josie's name as Junie's mother.

Not a grandmother. A mother.

I turned the phone toward my chest and typed under the table with one thumb.

Photograph the slip before they take it. Send it to me now.

The head's reply came back before I set the phone down.

Through the glass, Diane was still going at her son. Her voice had dropped. Her finger was still pointed at him.

Harold Vance came through the propped doors first, briefcase in one hand, glasses already on.

He set the briefcase down at the head of the table and did not sit.

'The ten o'clock meeting opens with one item,' he said. 'Corinne Sayer's signature on a staff-level pass.'
