Chapter 16: Regent

The anteroom was a coat closet with a window, and the two men holding me were thinking about lunch.

I stood quietly between them.

Through the wall I could not hear a single mind in the hall, only muffled voices.

Then a cane rapped three times on the boards, and the door opened.

"The oath is not sworn," said the old elder from the doorway. "By the first law of this pack, any Merrow daughter may speak to the circle once before it is. Let her go."

"Elder, the regent has asked..." one of my guards began.

"The regent has not been sworn," she said. "Let her go."

They let go.

I walked back into the hall rubbing my arms, and the room watched me do it.

Ronan stood against the back wall with the doctor beside him, arms folded.

He had promised me in the truck that he would not say a word until I was done.

His face showed nothing, but I heard him anyway.

Go on, love. It's yours.

Dorian smiled at me from the head of the room, easy and gracious.

"Of course," he said. "Let my sister-in-law be heard."

I walked to the middle of the half circle.

There were sixteen faces, and every one of them was thinking something I could hear.

"I'm not going to talk about my father," I said. "Or my sister, or the Kestrels. I'm going to talk to you."

I turned to the thin man in the second row, the tenth hand.

"Your daughter starts her second year of nursing school in the fall," I said. "Dorian holds the loan. He told you if you voted for him it would be forgiven."
