Chapter 7: The Salt Road

On Thursday morning the Merrow Pack sent six wolves to ride the Salt Road with us.

They called it a joint patrol, a show of the new alliance.

I rode in the cab of Ronan's truck between him and Wynn, with my knees against the dash.

The six Merrow wolves followed in a pickup of their own, two in the cab and four in the bed.

They were polite at the checkpoint. They shook Ronan's hand and called me Luna.

Their minds were not polite.

I heard them the moment I stepped out of the truck.

Past the second bend. The cut bank. The shooter has the rifle. Don't look at the trees.

I kept my face perfectly pleasant.

My hands went cold.

"Ronan," I said.

He turned. "What is it?"

I could not say, I can hear them.

I could not say, they've put men on the cut bank with wolfsbane rounds.

If I said it, he'd think I was mad, or he'd think I was lying.

"Don't take the road," I said. "Go through the trees on the east side. Please."

"The road's faster."

"I know."

"Calla." He looked at me steadily. "Why?"

"I have a bad feeling about the second bend."

Wynn glanced between us. Her mind was puzzled and then, to my surprise, entirely on my side.

If she says it's bad, it's bad. Alphas who don't listen to their wives get shot.

"Ronan," Wynn said aloud. "Take the trees."

He looked at me one second longer.

Then he turned to the patrol and said, "We go through the woods."
