Chapter 20: After Dark

Mill Street smelled of bread at seven o'clock, though the bakery had closed hours ago.

The street lamps were already on, and my breath showed.

I stood at the bottom of an outside staircase with the folded address in my fist.

It was dark.

It was an hour after dark, and I was about to walk up to her door.

I climbed.

The door at the top was painted blue, and it opened before I could knock.

Erin stood in the light with her hair down and bare feet on the boards.

She wore a gray sweater that slid off one shoulder, and she did not step aside.

"Rule three," I said.

"I know."

"You said you'd never come to my door after dark."

"I did say that." Her mouth curved. "I didn't come to yours. You came to mine."

"That's a technicality."

"It's a good one." She stepped back and pulled the door wide. "Come in, Alec."

I went in.

It was one room, with a bed under a slanted window and a hot plate and two chairs.

A lamp stood on the floor, and the whole place had a gold cast.

She shut the door behind me and turned the lock.

I heard it click, and I stood there with my back to it.

"I'm going to say something out loud," Erin said. "So you know I'm not hiding it."

"Okay."

"I have wanted you since the kitchen." Her voice was low and it did not waver. "Since the moment you took my wrist. I've thought about your hands on me every night for a week. I've been awful at my classes."
