Chapter 22: You Stayed

The CT scan said concussion, no bleed.

The doctor in the emergency room said it twice, because I made her.

She put four stitches in the scar through his eyebrow and told me he'd been very lucky and very stupid, in that order.

"He hit his head on a car mirror," she said. "Who does that?"

"He does," I said.

They kept him overnight for observation, in a room on the fourth floor with a window over the parking garage.

His mother sat in the one good chair until midnight, very straight, not talking.

His father went for sandwiches and came back with eleven.

Maisie fell asleep across two plastic chairs with her sundress tangled around her knees and her mouth open.

I sat on the edge of the bed in my red dress and held his hand.

My gown was balled up in a bag under the bed.

I didn't let go when the nurses came in.

I didn't let go when his mother finally stood and said, "You should go home and sleep."

"No," I said.

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she touched my shoulder, once, on her way to the door.

At a little after two in the morning, his fingers moved in mine.

I looked up.

His eyes were open.

They were clear.

He looked at the ceiling, and the window, and the monitor, and then at me, still in red, with my hair coming down.

His voice was rough.

"You stayed."

I couldn't say anything.

I nodded.

He closed his eyes again, and his hand tightened around mine, and he went back to sleep holding on.

Brock's mother came at nine in the morning.

She stood in the doorway of the family waiting room in the same lilac dress, creased now, and asked a nurse for me by name.

She was small and tired, with Brock's sandy hair going gray at the part.
