Chapter 6: The Tote Bag

Nine people were waiting for me in the boardroom on the twentieth floor, and only one of them was on my side.

My father sat at the head of the long glass table in his gray suit.

He looked tired.

He looked like a man who had not slept, and that frightened me more than the rest of them put together.

Six board members sat down the sides in a row of navy and charcoal.

At the far end sat the CEO of the Boston group, a big bald man with a white mustache.

He slid it toward me as I sat down.

It was an email from my school account to his private one, timed 6:52 p.m. Sunday.

Every number in our offer was in it, down to the last parking garage.

At the bottom it said, "Thought you should know what my dad really thinks you're worth. A.T."

"I didn't write that," I said.

"It's your address," said a board member with a Yale ring. "Your initials."

"At 6:52 last night I was standing on a chair in the student union," I said.

"In front of four hundred people. There's video. A lot of video."

That got a twitch of the mustache from the Boston end.

"Then someone has your password," the Yale ring said. "Which is still your problem, Miss Townsend."

"Yes," I said. "It is. Give me five minutes and I'll solve it."

My father looked at me over his reading glasses.

He didn't ask what I was doing.

He just nodded once.

"Five minutes," he said.

I stood up.

"I'd like all of you to come with me."

The Yale ring started to object.

The Boston CEO was already pushing back his chair.

"I drove down from Boston on a Monday morning for this," he said. "I'd like to see the show."
