Chapter 8: The Captains' Board

Jenna wore green to the rowing banquet, and she wore it on Wyatt's arm.

The banquet was upstairs in the boathouse, in the long hall with the old racing shells hung from the rafters.

Round tables, white cloths, a hundred rowers and their dates and their parents.

Rain was coming down hard on the windows over the river.

Maisie had smuggled me in as her plus-one.

She coxed the women's second boat, which meant she was five foot three of pure volume and everyone on the team was afraid of her.

"Table nine," she said, steering me by the elbow. "Directly across from them. You're welcome."

"Maisie, I don't want to sit across from them."

"Yes, you do."

Jenna saw me the second I sat down.

Her smile could have stripped paint.

She leaned close to Wyatt and said something into his ear, and laughed, and put her hand flat on his chest.

He didn't move it.

He didn't look at me either.

He was in a dark suit, his hair still damp from the rain, and he was listening to the coach with complete attention.

Jenna found me by the dessert table twenty minutes later.

"I didn't know you'd taken up rowing," she said sweetly.

"I didn't know you'd taken up Wyatt."

"He asked me," she lied, without blinking. "I think he likes girls who don't humiliate him on stages."

She leaned in, close enough that I could smell her perfume.

It was my perfume.

"Enjoy the cake," she said. "It's the only thing here you'll get to take home."

The coach stood up at the front to give the awards, a gray, weathered man with a voice built for yelling across water.

When Wyatt's name was read with the seniors, the whole room stood.

Behind the coach hung the captains' board.
