Chapter 8: What Colton Knew

Luka didn't step aside.

"Colton," he said. "It's eleven at night."

"I know. I'm sorry." Colton held the velvet box against his chest like a shield. "I tried to call. I didn't know whether you'd pick up."

"Why would I pick up?"

"Because you were right about me, I think."

He said it to me, not to Luka, and that was the first reason I let him in.

He stood in the middle of the room and didn't sit.

The box in his hands was blue velvet, and I could see his thumbnail digging into the lid.

"I was going to propose to Savannah at Thanksgiving," he said. "This is the ring. I picked it out three weeks ago."

"Congratulations," Luka said, flatly.

"I paid for it with a card she gave me. She said it was from her trust fund and that I shouldn't worry about it, it was a surprise." He swallowed. "Ever since the dinner I keep thinking about how she said that."

"And?" I said.

"And I went home and looked at the statement."

He took a folded stack of paper out of his jacket pocket.

His hands were not steady.

"I booked the Plaza for our engagement party in the spring. I put down the deposit on the same card. Then the spa weekend, the Aspen trip, the bracelet. It's all here. I printed everything."

Luka took the pages and read them.

I watched his face, because I was too afraid to read them myself.
