Chapter 17: The Proxy
Elias's POV
I drove her to the hospital myself, and neither of us said anything.
She sat with her phone in both hands and her bare feet pushed into her boots.
On the cardiac ward at half past six, Marcy stood at the nurses' station in a cream coat with a folder against her chest.
Two men in clinic jackets waited beside a wheeled bed.
A third man in a good overcoat stood a step behind her.
He was a doctor, and he was the Lasker family's friend, and I had his name in a folder at home.
"There she is," Marcy said, softly, and turned to Diana.
"Sweetheart, I didn't want to wake you. I know how hard this month has been."
"Show me the paper," Diana said.
Marcy opened the folder.
It was a health care proxy, four years old, signed by Arthur Pellam and witnessed by the foundation's old lawyer.
The agent named on it was Marcy Dolan.
I read it over Diana's shoulder.
It was real.
"He signed it when his heart first went," Marcy said. "I'm the one he trusted to make decisions if he couldn't. And he can't, not now. You've been so overwrought."
"He's awake," Diana said.
"He's sedated."
"He is not," said the cardiologist.
He had come up the corridor behind us in his white coat with his glasses on his forehead and a clipboard in his hand.
He was a tall man, and he looked tired, and he looked angry.
"Mr. Pellam has been alert since yesterday evening," he said. "I wrote it in the chart. Ms. Dolan, a proxy only applies when the patient can't decide for himself. He can."
"The Lasker clinic has a cardiac wing," the man in the overcoat said smoothly. "Better equipment."
