Chapter 27: A Boy
"Connie!" I yelled up the stairs.
She came down in one leap, in a T-shirt and her scrub pants, already pulling her hair back.
She took one look at the floor and at my sister's face.
"How many weeks?"
"Thirty-one," I said.
"Any pain?"
"My back," Valentina said. "All night. I thought it was the mattress."
Connie put her palm flat on the top of the bump and held it there, counting under her breath.
Her face didn't change. That was how I knew it was bad.
"Okay," she said, in a calm voice I'd never heard her use. "We're not waiting for an ambulance. Maimonides has the NICU. Lili, get the van. Valentina, you're going to walk to the door with me and you're going to breathe like I tell you."
"I'm scared," Valentina said.
"I know, sweetheart. You're allowed. Breathe anyway."
I drove down Fort Hamilton Parkway at one in the morning through every red light.
Connie sat in the back with my sister's head in her lap and her fingers on her wrist.
"Is he okay?" Valentina kept asking. "Is he okay?"
"He's thirty-one weeks," Connie said. "That's a real baby. He's got lungs and fingernails and an opinion. Breathe."
At the hospital they took her through the doors in a wheelchair.
