I walked down the hall to him.
He didn't move out of the doorway.
"You saw my face," he said.
"I saw it."
"It's done, Lili. The developer can't touch you. Nobody can."
"Not here," I said. "Not in a hospital. Tomorrow. My counter. Ten o'clock. Bring the papers."
"Lili..."
"Bring the papers, Cesare."
On Saturday at ten the shop was full.
It was the first of the warm days, and 18th Avenue had come out to stand in it.
My mother was behind the counter in an apron, sweeping brass shavings, because it was Saturday and she was paying for something.
The old men from the social club were waiting on keys.
Number three was there with cookies, and number one with her boy, who could now say "deadbolt" and "cannoli" and nothing in between.
The barber was in the doorway with his towel.
Cesare came in at ten exactly with the courier envelope in his hand.
He'd come straight from the hospital. He'd slept in a plastic chair.
The whole shop went quiet.
"Put it on the counter," I said.
He put it down on Nonno's burn mark.
I took out the page with his handwriting on it.
