Chapter 22: Where the Cows Are
The custody hearing was Monday morning in the county courtroom, with a judge sent from Amarillo.
The county judge had recused himself on Sunday.
He had also been questioned for four hours about a midnight signature on a court order.
The room was packed to the doors.
Half the town had come in the same boots they wore to the rodeo.
Poppy sat beside me at the front table in a yellow dress that Carys had bought at the feed store on Sunday, with her pink hat on her knee.
Carys was not in the room.
I had looked for her braid twice before the judge came in.
The Faulk lawyer in the silver tie sat on the other side, alone.
His clients were in county jail, and the only person he represented in that room was the family name.
"Your Honor," he said, getting up. "Mrs. Rawlins has rights as this child's mother."
"Mrs. Rawlins is in custody," the judge said. She was a thin woman with gray hair and a flat Panhandle voice. "On a charge of conspiring to murder this child's father."
"She is presumed innocent."
"She bought a one-way ticket to Mexico with this child's name on it, counsel. And an expedited passport for a seven-year-old, with a signature I understand is not the father's."
The lawyer sat down.
The judge looked down at the paper in front of her.
"The emergency order against Mr. Rawlins," she read. "Signed at one in the morning by a judge who is no longer on this bench. It is vacated as of this morning, in its entirety."
A murmur went around the room.
I felt Poppy's hand slide into mine under the table.
"The transfer of the deed on Mill Road," the judge said. "Procured while the grantor was deployed, by a spouse the state now believes planned his death. The court sets it aside pending trial."
