Chapter 8: Rain in the Barn
It rained that night, a hard flat rain that came across the plains sideways.
Carys let me sleep in the hay barn, because the house was too small to share, she said.
I did not sleep.
I lay on a bale with my duffel under my head and counted the places Poppy might be sleeping, and the beds were all wrong.
At midnight I heard the barn door roll open.
She came in with a lantern and a thermos, dripping, in a man's flannel shirt.
"Coffee," she said.
"Thanks."
She did not leave.
She walked down the row of empty stalls to the last one.
The nameplate on it said IRONSIDE in burned letters.
She put her palm flat on the wood.
I stood up out of the straw and watched her.
"You sat there for ten minutes," she said, without turning around.
"When?"
"At the hearing. That lawyer called you a killer to your face, and you did not even blink."
"A fight in a courtroom is a fight I lose."
"I know that," she said. "I wanted you to hit him anyway."
She turned.
Her eyes were wet, and she was furious about it.
"I've had a hard week," she said. "I buried my husband's bull. I stood up in front of the whole county. I'm angry at you, Wyatt. I can't stop being angry at you."
"You can be."
"I know I can."
"Then be angry," I said. "Here."
I stepped closer.
I stopped with the lantern between us.
She looked at my mouth.
The rain hammered the roof.
"You saved a little girl," she said quietly. "You shot my bull and saved a little girl. I keep trying to hold both of those, and I can't make them fit."
