Chapter 30: No Contract
We went to the clerk together the next morning.
The same officiant who had married us at South Rail brought out the register.
He remembered the night because Rita had made him wash his hands before touching her kitchen table.
"Your dispute is settled," he said. "Either of you can end the union."
"Both of us are here," I answered.
Valerio looked at me.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. I want what comes next to be ours."
He signed after I did.
The officiant recorded the dissolution of our civil and pack marriage.
No bond snapped.
No wolf cried out.
The absence felt clean.
Outside, Valerio stopped beneath the same stone steps where I had once chased a death record.
"Would you let me take you to dinner?" he asked.
"As a date?"
"As whatever you choose to call it."
"Then yes. A date."
He grinned.
For three weeks, we went places that had nothing to do with debt.
He showed me the lake when the lights came on along its shore.
I took him to a small cinema where the seats creaked and no one recognized him.
He learned which market vendor sold the tart apples I liked.
I learned he could repair a radio but could not hang a shelf straight.
At South Rail, he came for supper only when someone invited him.
He also came one morning to help carry timber into the old rear room.
When the engine repairer corrected his grip, Valerio adjusted without pretending he already knew.
The residents made room for him because he kept returning as a person.
One Friday, I asked him to stay after the others went upstairs.
