Chapter 21: The Cottage
Four days after the challenge, I took Rhys home to my mother's cottage.
The drawers were still pulled out.
The spools from my mother's sewing box were still all over the rug where Rosamund's people had left them.
I stood in the doorway and looked at it.
Rhys stood behind me with a box of Greer's bread and a bag of my things and didn't say anything.
"I want to sleep here tonight," I said.
"Then we sleep here."
"The bed's tiny."
"Then we sleep on the floor."
I laughed and went in.
We put the drawers back.
He picked spools off the rug one by one with his big scarred fingers and dropped them into the sewing box, and I watched him do it and couldn't stop smiling.
Around three, someone knocked at the gate.
I went out.
There were four Stalbridge women standing at my fence in the snow.
I knew all of them.
The one in front was the woman who used to braid my hair, the one who'd told me at the market to go home.
She was holding a folded quilt.
My mother's wedding quilt, blue and white, the one that had been on my bed the night of the altar.
"It was in the Luna's house," she said. "In a cupboard. Her women brought it back from here the night they searched. And these."
The woman beside her held out a cloth bag.
Inside were my mother's silver thimble, her reading glasses, and the little wooden frame with my parents' faces in it.
My throat closed up.
"We didn't take them," the first woman said quickly. "We just found them. Yesterday, when they cleared out her rooms."
"You took them back," I said.
"Yes."
"Nobody made you."
"No."
She looked down at the snow, and then she made herself look up.
