Chapter 5: The Empty Womb

For one second, the whole square made no sound at all.

Then three hundred wolves started talking at once.

"That's a lie," Delphine said. Her voice cracked on the last word. "Agnes Gowen has always hated me. She's jealous of my family."

"I'm sixty-six," Agnes said. "I'm not jealous of anyone."

"Papa," Delphine said. "Make her take it back."

My father didn't move.

Corbin did.

He took one step toward Delphine and stopped.

"You showed me a test," he said. "Six weeks. You said you were sick every morning."

"I was," Delphine said. Tears ran down her face so smoothly that I almost admired them. "I lost it, Corbin. I lost it on Wednesday. I couldn't tell you. I didn't want to ruin today."

"You didn't tell me," he said slowly. "You let me reject my mate in front of the pack."

"I did it for us!"

"A loss leaves a mark for a month," Agnes said. "I'd feel it in the first breath. There was never a pup to lose."

She opened her leather bag and took out a small notebook.

"Two weeks ago, Delphine came to my clinic for a carrying draught. She said it was for a friend." Agnes turned a page and held it up. "I gave her one vial. It makes a wolf's test read positive for a fortnight. It makes nothing grow."

"That's my handwriting in the margin," Agnes said. "And that's hers beside it."

She held the notebook out to the nearest elder.

The old woman took it, read the page, and handed it to the next.

I watched it go from hand to hand around the circle.

Delphine stopped crying.
