Chapter 18: Second Chance
I wasn't angry.
"Why?" I said. "Why refuse it?"
"Because a man had just torn one out of you in a waiting room." Abel looked at his hands. "Then you walked into my office, and the Moon goes, here, have another."
"I didn't want to be the spare," he said. "The one the Moon hands you because the first one broke."
"Abel."
"I've been the boy who bit for thirty years, Imogen. I know what it is to be what somebody gets instead."
I went and sat on the other bucket.
Our knees touched.
"My wolf stood up the first day too," I said. "In your office. I didn't like it either."
He laughed, very quietly.
"Great. We're both furious about it."
I took his hand and turned it over.
"The Moon chose for me once," I said. "It handed me a man who didn't want me, and I spent three years being polite about it."
"So."
"I want to choose this time. Not be chosen. I want to know it's you I want, and not the pull."
"How do we do that?"
"Like humans," I said. "Slowly. You take me to dinner. You're terrible at it. We see."
