Chapter 31: Full Moon

"Yes," I said.

His shoulders dropped, a grin breaking across his face.

"Yes," I said again, louder, so his foster mother could hear it through the glass.

She opened the back door.

"Yes what?"

"Thanksgiving," Abel said. "You're coming to Copper Falls."

She looked at him.

She looked at me.

She looked at our hands.

"I'll bring the pies," she said, and shut the door.

Thanksgiving fell on the full moon that year.

We ate it at the night clinic, because that was the only place big enough for everyone.

The old vet's lawn chair.

Gurneys pushed end to end down the hallway, with sheets for tablecloths.

June's husband carved two turkeys with a surgical saw I had sterilized for him, under protest.

Abel's foster mother came down from Missoula in a church van with her husband, six pies and the replacement gnome, which she set on our front step without explanation.

She and Jarek's grandmother sat side by side at the head of the gurneys.

They'd known each other for an hour.

They were already ganging up on me.

"Five hours of sleep," Abel's foster mother said.

"Coffee for breakfast," said the grandmother.

"I'm right here," I said.

"We know, girl. That's the problem."

Tansy sat beside her mother in a lavender sweater she'd bought herself.

Her acceptance letter from the nursing program in Missoula was taped to the cat ward door, with the cat ward painted lavender behind it.

The laundress said grace.

It was short and mostly about the senior Elder's bail being denied.

Jarek didn't sit at the table.

He sat on the front step, by the door, in his work coat, with a plate on his knees.

Every so often somebody came in out of the cold, a rogue off the highway, a logger with a cut thumb, and he got up and held the door.

When the moon came up over the ridge, everybody went quiet.

It was enormous.

White as bone.

"Well," June said, and put down her fork. "Go on, then."

We walked down the road to the river in our coats.

All of them came.

June and her husband and the three boys.

The grandmother on her cane, with Abel's foster mother holding her other arm.
