Chapter 6: Market Day

I put the honey down on the nearest table.

The woman behind it said, "Doc, you didn't pay," and then saw my face and said nothing else.

I walked across the square.

The crowd moved out of my way.

Posy saw me coming.

Her laugh stopped halfway.

Two enforcers stood behind her with their arms folded, big men in Reyner work jackets.

So he'd given her a guard.

"Dr. Bracewell," Posy said, sweet as the pie in her hand. "How's your nose?"

"Healed. How's your ankle?"

"Much better." She lifted her chin. "The human doctors were wonderful."

"I'm sure." I looked at her throat. "That's a pretty scarf."

Her fingers went to it.

Then they smoothed the bow.

"Thank you."

"Where did you get it?"

"It was a gift."

"From who?"

The baker had stopped pretending to wrap a loaf.

A circle was forming, the way it does at a market when someone's voice goes quiet and hard.

"From someone who loves me," Posy said. "Not that it's any of your business."

"It's hand-knitted," I said. "And somebody stitched initials on it."

I reached out and turned the end of the scarf over so the whole square could see it.

T.M.

"Who's T.M., Posy?"

"Don't touch me."

"I'm not touching you. I'm touching the scarf."

"It's my grandmother's," she said fast. "Those were her initials. She made it for me before she died."

It was a good lie.

She had an answer ready.

That was the thing I would think about later.

She had an answer ready.

"Tansy Merle," I said, loud enough for the back of the crowd. "Nineteen. She worked nights in the Reyner house laundry. She went missing on May twenty-fourth wearing a lavender scarf her mother knitted her, with her initials stitched in white."

A sound went through the crowd.
