Chapter 8: Silver

"Steel table," I said. "Now. June, monitor."

The enforcer laid his boy down.

The pup didn't even whimper.

That was the worst sign.

Pups whimper.

His pulse under my fingers was fast and thready, way too fast for a wolf.

His skin was cold.

The blue lines ran up both sides of his neck and into his hairline.

"When did this start?"

"Tuesday. He was off his food. Wednesday he threw up. Tonight he wouldn't wake up right."

"Did he touch anything silver? A knife, a bullet, jewelry?"

"No. We don't keep silver. Nobody keeps silver."

"Think. Anything."

The enforcer stared at his son.

Then his face changed.

"His mother's earrings," he said. "She has one pair. Her grandmother's. One went missing on Monday."

"He swallowed it."

"He's six."

"He swallowed it," I said again. "And it's been sitting in his stomach leaching for four days."

The ultrasound older than June's son showed me something bright and hooked in the pup's belly.

I needed a scope to get it out.

I didn't have a scope.

General had a scope.

I pulled out my phone.

Abel answered on the first ring.

"Hendry."

"I need your pediatric scope and a chelation drip, and I need them twenty minutes ago."

"Silver?"

"An earring. Six-year-old. Four days."

"On my way."

He came through the door seventeen minutes later carrying a scope tower on a cart that clearly hadn't been signed out to anybody.

"Outreach," he said, before I could ask.

We worked.

He was good.

His big hands were steady on the scope.

When I said "left," he was already going left.

We got the earring out at three twenty.

It came up in the little wire basket, black with tarnish, and the enforcer made a sound I'll never forget.
