Chapter 9: Cold Room

"A cooler," I said. "What kind of cooler?"

"Little white one. Like you'd take on a fishing trip." The enforcer turned the earring over in his palm. "She goes in, and she's back out in five minutes."

"Does the Alpha know?"

"The Alpha drops her off and waits in the truck."

Abel and I looked at each other.

"Why are you telling me?" I asked.

The enforcer looked through the doorway at his son, who was sitting up on the steel table now, eating a dog treat June had given him as a joke.

"Because you looked," he said. "He didn't."

"You're going to do something stupid," he said.

"Yes."

"When?"

"Three tomorrow morning. That's when Mill Street is emptiest."

"You're banned from Mill Street."

"I'm aware."

"If they catch you, the council can do whatever it likes."

"Then they'd better not catch me."

He rubbed his face with both hands.

"I'm coming."

"No, you're not. You're a lone wolf on Reyner ground in the middle of the night. They'd skin you and call it trespass."

At five minutes to three on Saturday morning, I parked behind the feed store on Mill Street with my lights off.

June was already waiting in the alley in a black hoodie, looking like the world's most suspicious mother of three.

"I still have my key," she whispered. "Five years, nobody ever asked for it back."

"Nobody asks you for anything back. They're scared of you."

"Damn right."

The back door of my father's clinic opened before she could use the key.

The night orderly was standing there.

He was a wiry old wolf who'd worked for my father, then for me, and who was now working for a man from Billings who called him "you there."

"Doc," he said. "Heard you might come by."

"Who told you?"

"Your enforcer's on the front door. He told me to leave the back unlocked and go take a long smoke." He held the door wider. "I don't smoke. I'll stand here and not see anything."
