Chapter 4: What Cold Fork Owes

I woke up in the back seat of a truck with the heater roaring.

Both babies were in my lap, wrapped in the black coat, and a woman in a green medical jacket had two fingers on my pulse.

"Don't sit up," she said. "You lost a lot of blood. They're both fine. Your son has a very strong grip."

I sat up anyway.

Through the windshield I could see the road, the gate and the whole Cold Fork pack standing in the snow.

The king stood in front of them with his hands behind his back.

I opened the door.

"Miriam," the woman said. "Please."

I put one foot on the road and nobody stopped me.

The king was speaking, and his voice was quiet and carried to the last row.

"Your Alpha has put my daughter out of a birthing bed in front of you," he said. "Every one of you saw it and none of you spoke."

Nobody spoke now either.

"Cold Fork holds its land by a charter signed by my grandfather. As of this morning that charter is under review by the crown. Until I've read it, no wolf in this pack may leave the territory, and no wolf may enter."

A murmur ran through the crowd.

An old woman near the front lowered her eyes.

"Harlan Hesketh," the king said. "You will remain at your house, with two of my men on your door."

Harlan bowed from the waist.

"Your Majesty is entitled to ask what he likes," he said. "I have served this pack for forty years. I know nothing of wolfsbane."
