Chapter 4: Take It Back

Nobody in the Moon Hall moved.

Brant crossed the floor toward me, and I watched his shoes on the polished wood.

"I was scared," he said. "I did a stupid thing in front of everyone. I said I'd never let go of you, and I meant it."

"You said you weren't going anywhere," I said.

"I'm here, aren't I?"

His father had gone very still at the end of the table.

That was the first thing that told me this had been planned.

Brant did not look at his father, and his father did not look at Brant, and neither of them looked surprised.

The oldest elder folded his hands.

"The law is clear," he said. "A rejection withdrawn by the one who spoke it, before the rejected wolf has answered, is as if it was never spoken. The old bond stands."

"I haven't answered," I said.

"No."

"So I'm still his."

"Until you answer." The old man looked almost sorry. "You may accept the rejection, which makes it final. Or you may let it be withdrawn, and the claim holds."

Brant held out his hand to me, palm up.

"Come home, Max. I'll make it right. I'll tell everyone I was wrong."

My shoulder throbbed under the navy fabric.

Fourteen months of being picked up and put down by this man ran through my head.

I will be honest, part of me wanted to take his hand.

Part of me had spent my whole life wanting to be wanted by anyone.

Then I thought about his voice, soft and kind in front of nine packs, saying he couldn't claim what he couldn't smell.

I looked at Brant's hand, and I did not take it.
