Chapter 19: Exile

My jaws closed on her wrist before my mind caught up.

The knife rang off the flagstones.

The stepmother went down under a silver wolf the size of a fox, who had no business being so strong.

I held her there with my teeth in her sleeve and my forepaws on her chest, and I looked into her face.

For the first time in my life, she was afraid.

"Lenna," said Osian, very gently, above me. "She's done. Let go."

I let go.

I changed back on the stone floor with my knees under me.

Somebody threw a cloak over my shoulders before I could feel the cold.

A shout went up from the back of the hall.

Four grey jackets had slipped out of the crowd while every eye was on the table.

The foremost was the enforcer, with his dead hand healed enough to hold a blade.

They went for Osian's back.

They got three steps.

The King's black riders were not behind the stepmother's chair for her, it turned out.

They were behind it because Garland had counted cuffs for half the night.
